Novembertagung on the History of Mathematics 2017

Thursday 2 November 2017 (All day) to Saturday 4 November 2017 (All day)
Brussels, Belgium

Theme: Tools for research in mathematics, history and philosophy Invited speakers: Liesbeth de Mol (Lille) & Ralf Krömer (Wuppertal)

The Centre for Logic and Philosophy of Science (CLWF) of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) will host the Novembertagung on the History of Mathematics 2017 in Brussels, Belgium. Registration and call for papers are now open. The Novembertagung on the History of Mathematics is an annual international conference aimed at PhD and postdoctoral students in the history of mathematics and related fields. It provides an opportunity for them to present and discuss their research in an informal and safe environment, share experiences and advice and to establish new contacts.

The theme of the Novembertagung this year is

“Tools for research in mathematics, history and philosophy”

We encourage submissions of two kinds:

  1. 1)      historical and philosophical considerations about tool use in mathematics
  2. 2)      methodological considerations about history and philosophy of mathemati

The theme serves as a guide, not as an criterion for exclusion; it is not necessary for a submission to engage with the theme to be accepted.

We will be able to cover the conference costs, including accommodation and all meals, for all participants, but the available spaces are limited and registration is required.

The call for papers is now open. We encourage young researchers to submit abstracts of 500 words or less to novembertagung2017@gmail.com. The submission deadline is August 15, 2017. Letters of confirmation will be sent out shortly after this date.

The Novembertagung 2017 is supported by the Strategic Research Program entitled “Logic and Philosophy of Mathematical Practices” of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Doctoral School of Human Sciences (DSh) of the VUB.

Please note that the GDR 3398 will be hosting an Instructional Conference near Marseilles the week after the Novembertagung, November 6-10. We encourage our participants to participate in this event as well: http://programme-scientifique.weebly.com/1758.html
