Maths meets history - A new History of Mathematics Column

Maths meets history - A new History of Mathematics Column

Thursday 8 October 2015

UCL PhD students have recently started an exciting topical magazine-“chalkdust”- about maths, which is available online.  http://chalkdustmagazine.com/

For Issue 2, chalkdust starts a regular column featuring the history of maths called “Roots”.

Emma Bell’s first “Roots” article is right on target with “All things being equal”, highlighting Robert Recorde who in 1557 introduced the world to something we all now take for granted - the humble equals sign “=”.

Going to talks about the history of mathematics, one name that crops up more than any other is Robert Recorde, so Emma has chosen an excellent starting point for “Roots”.

Emma also provides a link to a pdf copy of “The Whetstone of Witte”, which is now out of copyright (332 pages of bedtime reading)!

Best wishes to chalkdust and to Roots from BSHM!
