Accessibility & Diversity Working Group

Accessibility & Diversity Working Group

The Accessibility & Diversity Working Group (ADWG) was formed following a resolution at BSHM Council on 25th March 2021, and aims to make the BSHM more accessible and diverse.

Please get in touch by emailing if you have comments or feedback on our approach to accessibility and diversity or if you want to get involved.

Guiding principles

The BSHM's approach to Accessibility & Diversity is informed by the following Guiding Principles.

  • Making the BSHM an open, welcoming space
  • Proactively including and respecting people from all backgrounds
  • Welcoming work which challenges a solely white, male, Eurocentric model of mathematics
  • Engaging openly with problematic legacies in the history of mathematics
  • Challenging inappropriate behaviour or actions
  • Embedding accessibility and considering diversity in all our activities
  • Acknowledging the need for individualised and inclusive approaches to events and publications

We expect events and work associated with the BSHM to abide by these principles and we expect members to appreciate them.

Guidelines for BSHM Members

We have a web page with guidelines on how to help make and keep the BSHM as accessible and diverse as possible. They are for all our members to read for advice and information.

The ADWG comprises:

  • Troy Kaighin Astarte (chair)
  • Isobel Falconer
  • Tony Mann (secretary)
  • Holly Middleton-Spencer
  • Sue Pope
  • Survey

Many thanks to everyone who took the accessibility and diversity survey, which is now closed. We are using the information gathered to inform and improve the Society's future actions. The webpage is preserved for future information.

If you have a concern or query about accessibility & diversity, please get in touch with us at This will go to the chair of the group. If you have a concern about the chair, please get in touch with the BSHM secretary.

We are always interested in the possibility of new recruits and we especially welcome recruits from ethnic minority backgrounds. If you are interested, and are a BSHM member, please get in touch via the ADWG email address above.
