2023 Thomas Harriot Lecture

Thursday 27 April 2023 - 17.00 to 18.00
Oriel College, Oxford

Dr Kim Sloan, formerly Curator of British Drawings and Watercolours at the British Museum, will deliver the 2023 Thomas Harriot Lecture at 5 pm on Thursday 27 April 2023 in the Champneys Room, Oriel College, Oxford.

The title of Dr Sloan’s lecture will be: ‘Collected and counterfeited according to the truth’: John White’s watercolours of the Algonquians of North Carolina.

Dr Sloan’s catalogue of the White watercolours was published, with interpretative essays, as A New World: England’s First View of America (British Museum Press, 2007). The British Museum’s Enlightenment Gallery, for which she was lead curator, opened in 2003, accompanied by the book Enlightenment: Discovering the World in the 18th Century, which she edited. She has also organised exhibitions and written widely on British landscape and the history of collections, especially Sir Hans Sloane’s.

After the lecture, at 6 pm, there will be an informal drinks reception, also in the Champneys Room.
