The Many Uses of Binary Arithmetic
The binary system, which recognizes only ones and zeros, is at the heart of the computer revolution that occurred in the middle of the twentieth century. But what uses did it have prior to that? In this talk, Lloyd Strickland answers this question, paying particular attention to the work of the polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716), who discovered binary arithmetic in the 1670s.
