The BSHM is a friendly, welcoming society and is open to all with an interest in the history of mathematics. The membership of the BSHM includes people from many backgrounds: researchers, teachers from primary level to university, students of the history of mathematics or science, and those who have a general interest in cultural history.  About a third of the membership is from outside the UK.

BSHM recently began using “Membermojo” (an online membership management package) to help improve our administration.  We still accept offline applications and payments, but members who prefer online methods are now more fully accommodated.

Members can join, renew and (when necessary) update their own details online.  Payments can be made online using credit/debit card or PayPal.   Direct debit payers can join online but (for the time being) will still need to initially post us a completed direct debit form.  Cheque payers can use the online system to join or renew their membership and then pay by posting us a cheque.  We will confirm by email when we have received your payment.

New joiners in September to December will become full members immediately, and their subscription will last until the end of the following year.

We give a discount for members paying via Direct Debit. Membership rates for 2021 are as follows:

Ordinary member: £35 (£31 via Direct Debit).

Concessionary rate (retired, unwaged or student member): £20 (£18 via Direct Debit).

Under 25 (born in 1996 or later): £5.

Members may subscribe through BSHM to the journal Historia Mathematica for the special rate of £40 for 2021 (note this price is adjusted from previous years to take into account the changed GBP-USD exchange rate).   Members may also take out through BSHM a reciprocal membership of the Canadian Society for the History and Philosophy of Mathematics (CSHPM/SCHPM), which costs an additional £12.  If you wish to take up either or both of these options, please add them to your online shopping cart or (if applying offline), fill in the printed form accordingly.

Members of the Society benefit from reduced admission to most of the Society's events, and receive the BSHM Journal, as well as regular mailings detailing forthcoming events of interest, whether organised by the BSHM or not. The Journal is also available on-line to BSHM members, as well as its full back catalogue.

To join, renew or update your details online, use MemberMojo. If you need help using the service, the Membership Secretary has provided a series of guides on this page.
