Accessibility & Diversity Working Group

Accessibility & Diversity Working Group

The Accessibility & Diversity Working Group (ADWG) was formed following a resolution at BSHM Council on 25th March 2021, and aimed to make the BSHM more accessible and diverse. The group was chaired by Troy Kaighin Astarte and also included Isobel Falconer, Tony Mann (as secretary), Holly Middleton-Spencer and Sue Pope.

The BSHM's approach to Accessibility & Diversity was informed by the following Guiding Principles.

  • Making the BSHM an open, welcoming space
  • Proactively including and respecting people from all backgrounds
  • Welcoming work which challenges a solely white, male, Eurocentric model of mathematics
  • Engaging openly with problematic legacies in the history of mathematics
  • Challenging inappropriate behaviour or actions
  • Embedding accessibility and considering diversity in all our activities
  • Acknowledging the need for individualised and inclusive approaches to events and publications

While this working group is no longer active, the web page with guidelines on how to help make and keep the BSHM as accessible and diverse as possible remains accessible. These guidelines are available to provide advice and information for all our members.
