Premodern Mathematical Thought: The Latinate Discussion (13th – 16th Century)

Friday 16 September 2022 (All day) to Friday 18 November 2022 (All day)
Online

This series of four meetings aims to foster new research paths while discussing fundamental topics intertwining the history of both science and philosophy in premodern Europe. The main focus of the workshops will be the Latinate discussion of philosophy of mathematics from 13th to 16th centuries. We will address a series of questions and problems that have marked the debate during this often-neglected period in the history of philosophy and science. Two main strands will structure our discussion: on the one hand, the use of mathematics or mathematical concepts within specific branches of medieval philosophy and debates. On the other hand, the epistemology of mathematics as well as its metaphysical and ontological implications.
